Some advice from the front lines of our culture war
I’m writing to ask you to use a tiny portion your immense wealth and influence to make a substantial improvement to the state of our nation here in the USA. You have this vision of saving humanity by making us an interplanetary species. You also seem to have a great love for the USA and its principles. Right now, those principles are under grave assault by the far left. I don’t think you need to be told of the threat, I’m sure you perceive it clearly enough. This threat cannot be successfully fought and eliminated by a frontal assault alone.
The threat has grown to dangerous proportions from decades of neglect of civic education in our public schools. Talk to any teenager, even college students and you find many are woefully ignorant of the founding principles of our country. Worse, they often have a dislike, even hatred for our country, having been taught that we are racist, fascist, and guilty of many twentieth century sins.
We are not a country of ethnic origin unlike the French, Germans, or countless others. Our identity is made up of the founding principles. It is these ideals or standards that have shaped our nation and helped make our country powerful and prosperous. The latest generation of young seems to have lost understanding of these principles which are the bedrock of what makes our country what it is. If we lose them, we have lost the fabric of our greatness.
I am asking that you assign some of the best scholars you can assemble to write a civics curriculum for K through 12 education. A modification of the curriculum could be assembled for home schooling as well. It would take a reasonably modest amount of money to do so and there are many scholars who would readily join such an endeavor. The next challenge would be to get such a curriculum into the public schools. It would start with the red states and localities. Liberal bastions would be most resistant, as we all know.
Parents and conservative education specialists fight every day against the leftist curriculums being pressed in public schools. It is a brave effort, but somewhat doomed. Rather, we need an alternative to present to school systems and parents. Your curriculum could give involved parents and politicians something to offer and lobby for adoption, not just stand against current policies. The presence of a truly academically qualified alternative would be a powerful tool against those who want to indoctrinate our youth and weaken our society.
In closing, space exploration is wonderful. Advancing technology is wonderful. So many of us are excited about your visions. But this, a proper civics curriculum, might be the best way to preserve and strengthen our county through the rest of the twenty-first century.
